Today is the 15th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. I would like to direct you to a single verse of Scripture as we begin: John 15:13. Jesus declared: “Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends.”
Tuesday, September 11 started out like any other day. Children getting ready to go to school. Parents getting ready for work. Commuters making their way into the office. Employees grabbing a cup of coffee and beginning the days work. And then the unthinkable happened. Everyone here has a “high-definition” memory of what you were doing that day, a day that is burned into the hearts and minds of every American.
Melia & I were going to school at Christ for the Nations. We started every day in worship! When worship was over someone came in the class & said something that got all of our attention. Down stairs we had a huge big screen TV. We all went downstairs to watch the news! We were horrified as we watched the scenes repeated on the big screen. When we went back to class I remember the teacher gave an impromptu speech on what had just happened and what our response would be. I remember admiring him for giving such a great speech from the heart with no preparation!
It’s been 15 years since that day and most of America seems to have forgotten it already! For me I will always remember that day! It is a faint memory compared to the way I felt 15 years ago, but for me the reason I’ll always remember is because there is such a picture of the spiritual battle we face every day. Islam is the religion of the devil himself. Who else would want to kill Christians and Jews? The devil hates God’s people. We have always been in spiritual warfare but that day we received a clear picture of what that looks like! The devil hates us and he wants to kill us, but God loves us and sent his son Jesus to die for us that we might have life! Hallelujah!
What should our response be in light of what we now know? Here are 3 things we should do. #1 Pray for our troops and our first responders. These folks are literally putting their lives on the line for us every single day. We should be praying for them and praying like our lives depend upon it, because in a very real sense they do!
Secondly, we should vote in every election and especially in the one coming up in November. We should pray for candidates who we think will be strong on national security and be willing to call Islamic terrorism for what it is. The biggest problem we’ve had in the last 15 years and nobody in our government is willing to see the enemy and call him by his name! Islamic terrorism is our enemy! We need to make sure we are registered to vote and we vote for those candidates up and down the ticket who best represent our Biblical values and those who we think will do their constitutional duty and protect the citizens of the United States from enemies foreign and domestic. Sometimes that choice isn’t clear or easy to make, but we must press in to God and be willing to be his agents here on earth to further the Kingdom of God here in the United States of America. We have been given an incredible gift as citizens of this country. We are allowed the privilege to vote for our leaders!
Thirdly, as best as we can, let us promote the spirit of 9/11. In the weeks following 9/11 there was such a spirit of unity in our nation. I pray it doesn’t take another disaster to be unified. You and I can do our part to make sure everything we do promotes unity! There is more that unites us than divides us! Let us promote those things that unite! We are all Americans and as Christians it is our duty to promote unity and the love of Jesus to a lost and dying world! In the famous words of Todd Beamer: “Let’s Roll!”
Consumed by the call,
